Design Explorations for the Creative Quilter

For the quilter who has mastered the geometric challenges of patchwork
and the wonderful possibilities of applique, who wants to move to the
more expressive and artistic, Katie Pasquini Masopaust tells us her way
to do so.

With an artists sensibility and tools and a quilters orderly approach, with
a skill for color and design, she outlines her methods for breaking out of
blocks and traditional design and charts a course for the journey into
creating cloth masterpieces without the traditional boundaries
and strictures.

Here is a treasure trove of information for the quilter without formal art
training and no particular knowledge of the tools, equipment and techniques
necessary to produce an original work of art within the quilt genre.

The tools and equipment are readily available and not at all intimidating.
The journey is well plotted, systematic and though not easy, with
diligence the destination is attainable.

Katie’s basic method is for translating photographic and printed images
to paper or acrylic and enlarging or diminishing the result into a workable
template and accomplishing a master drawing from which the quilt is
executed.  Her color and drafting instructions are invaluable for any
quilter wanting to grasp more knowledge and enhance basic artistic
capability.

Her exquisite work is sufficient inspiration alone to work through the
step by step instructions on producing an original work.  If you have
reached the stage in quilting where you enviously admire the landscapes,
the surreal and the new and different of the quilt artists, Katie offers this
great outline of her methods to get there.  Every artist works differently
and some quilt artists have been generous and skillful in teaching their
methods.  Hers is not the only way to produce an original, but for
quilters on a journey to enhance originality, it is one very excellent
guide.

There is a lot of fluff in quilt journalism; more than enough of the
cute and self serving and not every accomplished quilter is
necessarily a gifted writer.  Katie Pasquini Masopaust is a
great artist, a gifted writer and a fine teacher.  I highly recommend
this volume.
