Mechanization and Technology in the Quilt World

A quilting buddy and I were discussing the near disappearance
of hand quilting in the major contest results and quilt pub-
lications. We both do things somewhat the old fashioned way
though we have adopted some time and labor saving devices.

Neither of us plans to purchase automatic cutting machines.

Neither of us plans to purchase longarm quilting machines.

We both like hand quilting.

We both enter competitions and sometimes send quilts out to
be quilted.

There is no painting, doodling, raw edges, apprentices,
glue, sequins, doodads, felting, gluing, in our future.

My buddy likes classes, shows and show and tell.

I like books.

Neither of us learn by video, nor do we watch Quilt
TV, etc.

It was my conclusion that as a natural progression
it should not be too much longer before we see a
quilting robot.

Mitsubishi has a fine robot, which delivers mail
inside banks and does housekeeping on demand.
Surely he could be taught to quilt.

Alternatively, perhaps he could be taught to
cut, iron and fetch, then wash the dishes,
cook and fold the laundry.

I'll keep you posted.
