Lessons Learned and Relearned

Lessons Learned and Relearned

At the final border of my appliqued bridal quilt in work I had
to relearn a lesson that I already knew: None of the borders
should be so vibrant as to overshadow th body of the quilt.
After drafting and constructing one side of an eight inch wide
border of pieced one inch pieces of fabrics : pale marbelized pink,
light green/aqua tone on tone leaf print and a pale ecru print
reminiscant of the body of the quilt, I had to abandon it.  Years
of experience told me to pin it to the quilt so far constructed and
view it in new daylight before proceeding on three hundred
inches plus of the complete perimeter border of the quilt.
Early next morning revealed the dismal truth: the border was way too vibrant
and overwhelmed the body of the quilt.  Back to the drawing board.
Result: same pattern  in the pink, green and now with oyster white worked
perfectly.  The obsessive and frugal in me revolted in the wasted border
which will be transformed into vests or jackets for little girls who I sew for.
The border can be completed with fabric on hand and no new new drafting,
purchasing or choices necessary.  The moral of this saga is stick with what
you know and don’t  force yourself to learn the same lesson twice.

This time next week the quilt will be in quilting phase and photos will follow
when completed.  Applique in Summer is the way to Go!
